FAQ
Everything you need to know about our whisky glasses and decanters
Why use a specific whisky glass?
An exceptional whisky deserves a setting worthy of it, doesn't it? Whisky glasses , like tulip-shaped or Glencairn models, aren't just an aesthetic whim. Their shape is designed to concentrate aromas and offer an optimal tasting experience. A tumbler, on the other hand, is perfect for whiskies served over ice. In short: each glass has its purpose, just as each whisky has its own character.
Does a whisky decanter really make a difference?
Absolutely! A whisky decanter protects your precious nectar from oxidation while enhancing its visual appeal. It also transforms serving into an elegant ritual (and let's be honest, it's classy to pour whisky from a beautiful decanter). And if you still doubt it, try it: even your favorite bottle will look dated next to a well-chosen decanter.
What materials should be preferred for glasses and carafes?
Borosilicate glass and crystal are the stars of the whisky world. Borosilicate is lightweight and durable (handy if you're the clumsy type), while crystal offers unparalleled transparency and brilliance. In both cases, these materials enhance the color of your whisky and guarantee a visual experience that lives up to the flavors.
Can a whisky decanter be used for other spirits?
Of course! A decanter isn't picky. Cognac, rum, Armagnac, or even wine—anything goes. But let's face it: it remains particularly symbolic in the world of whisky. And besides, if you're a purist, why mix them? A dedicated decanter for each spirit is ideal.
Do ice cubes really dilute whisky?
Yes, and sometimes that's what you want. Regular ice cubes chill your drink but also dilute the aromas as they melt. If that bothers you, opt for whisky stones: they chill without water. And if you like your whisky well-chilled but not watered down, a large ice cube in a tumbler will do the trick perfectly.
What is the difference between a whisky glass and a cocktail glass?
A whisky glass is designed to enhance a neat or slightly diluted spirit, while a cocktail glass is designed to showcase mixed drinks. No thin stems or wide openings for whisky: here, the goal is to concentrate the aromas, not disperse them. So no, a whisky in a martini glass is not the best idea.
What is the ideal capacity for a whisky decanter?
Most carafes have a capacity of 750 ml, perfect for a standard bottle. But if you like to mix things up or create your own blends (no judgment!), larger carafes are also available. And for those who simply appreciate the beauty of the object, a smaller capacity may suffice.
How do I clean my whisky glasses and decanter?
No dishwasher for these gems! Wash them gently by hand with warm water and a little mild soap. For a decanter that's difficult to clean, a handful of uncooked rice and a little soapy water will work wonders. And no, there's no need to polish them with a magnifying glass: your whisky won't judge a tiny, forgotten mark.
